The Bernese Mountain Dog is an underserved breed on Puppy Love, so this post is dedicated to the adorable bundle of fur that is the Bernese Mountain Dog.

The Bernese Mountain Dog dates to 18th Century Switzerland with name origin being Canton of Bern and Swiss mountains.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is intelligent and easy to train.

This breed is friendly with strangers, excellent with children, and fits well with other dogs and household pets.

"A Bernese Mountain Dog will be your friend for life."  (Dog Breed Info)

Point of interest - According to Dog Breed Info, this breed is slow to mature and acts like a puppy for a prolonged period of time.  Firm but gentle training and leadership are necessary.

Stats:
- Males weigh on average 85 to 110 pounds & Females weigh on average 80 to 105 pounds
- Prone to bloat, cancer, eyelid problems, hip and elbow dysplasia, mast cell tumors
- DO NOT OVERFEED
- Sensitive to heat due to thick coat...Prefers cold climate

The average life span is 6 to 8 years.  This number is a drop from the former life span being 10 to 12 years.  Sadly, cancer is the leading cause for the decrease.
