The history of the Jack Russell Terrier dates to late 18th Century England and specific tie to Reverend John Russell, who bred the first fox terrier. The Jack Russell Terrier is a fox-hunting dog and its coat being primarily white comes with good reason - to differentiate the dog from the fox. Alisa Crawford, as one of the first to breed in the United States, founded the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America in 1976. In the UK, the South East Jack Russell Club set a minimum height standard at 13 inches. In 1983, the Parson Jack Russell Club of Great Britain set a standard based on the South East Jack Russell Club and, in 1990, the UK Kennel Club recognized the breed as the Parson Jack Russell Terrier or, as of 1999, the Parson Russell Terrier. The American Kennel Club likewise recognizes the Parson Russell Terrier breed name.
The Jack Russell Terrier temperament is intelligent, athletic, highly energetic, and fearless.
Obedience classes and proper socialization are recommended for new owners. A great amount of exercise and stimulation is needed to wear out the Jack Russell Terrier's energy. A lack of leadership and exercise will lead to boredom and destructive behavior.
