HISTORY :
- Hound breed
- Similar appearance to the Foxhound...Difference - Beagles have shorter legs and longer, softer ears
- Breed intent to track small game - i.e. hare, rabbits, deer, etc.
- Breed used as detection dogs for sense of smell and tracking instinct
- "Snoopy" is the "world's most famous beagle"

TEMPERAMENT :
- Loving, Gentle
- Social
- Brave, Intelligent
- Curious & tend to follow tracks - Remain in a safe area when off leash
- Child-friendly
- Good with other dogs
- NOT TOLERATE with non-canine pets due to hunting instinct ... EXCEPTION - Tolerate if socialized when young
- "Beagles have minds of their own" - Must train in a patient and firm way
- Daily pack walks with owner proven to be the leader
- Daily exercise avoids separation anxiety
- Howl/Bay bark
- If assumed to be pack leader, destructive behaviors occur - guarding, obsessive barking, biting...Brought on by lack of owner leadership, exercise...Destructive behavior is NOT typical of Beagles

- Susceptible to epilepsy, heart disease, eye problems, back problems

Professor Flitwick instilled interest in his magical instruction.
Flitwick the Beagle instilled magical ways in a lucky someone. Flitwick the Beagle was featured in my recent Examiner article, Harry Potter comes to PAWS Chicago. I am thrilled to say that he has since been adopted.

From time to time, I like to check in with The Anti-Cruelty Society online. From time to time, I do the same with PAWS Chicago. I see familiar faces and I meet new ones. I also miss a few.
Today I remember my sweetheart Beagle, Swanny. Swanny is a 2-year-old female Beagle brought into PAWS Chicago on May 5, 2010. She was my spotlight on Examiner in the article Favorite Breed 2010. Swanny was a special dog, so labeled by PAWS Chicago. Swanny was more so a special dog in my heart. She had a story to tell that no one heard because of her momentary lapse in proper behavior. I heard her story quite clearly. I loved Swanny a great deal and did hope dearly to adopt her. My resources, sadly, are still not together.
Swanny has found someone who will listen to her and give her a home fit for pure perfection. Swanny was adopted.
The Beagle breed is not easy to adopt in urban settings mainly because of their infamous howling bark. The American Kennel Club offers an incredible list of rescue groups around the United States. The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago, Illinois houses abused and neglected dogs and cats. The majority of injured animals at this shelter are dogs. Every day, a human being treats their dog without care. Every day, a dog is handled without love, warmth, and heart. Every day, there is a case of cruel abuse and neglect. So let me ask this question. When you look into their eyes, what do you see? What do you feel? What do you hear?
Look into the eyes of Cisco -
This precious angel is a 1-year-old Pit Bull/Terrier pup. He was brought into The Anti-Cruelty Society on December 1, 2010. Cisco is a new dog in the Society's Bully Buddy Program. One can only speculate as to why.

Look into the eyes of Swanny -
In my interview with PAWS Chicago for my Examiner article, "Favorite Breed 2010," I learned that Swanny is a special dog because while in her foster home, she accidentally bit her parent out of excitement. PAWS Chicago by policy must inform all potential adopters of this "attack." Is Swanny a vicious animal undeserving of unconditional love? One will learn upon further reading of my article that Swanny is not a bad dog because of her bite incident. She is misunderstood with a true story unknown. . .unknown since May 5, 2010.
When you look into their eyes. . .
In 2010, I said goodbye to Ham and Bambino and Maxine and Cosette and many others. In 2011, I welcome on Puppy Love my new loves.

Swanny and Wiggle Worm may be spotlights in 2010, but they are available for adoption in 2011. I fell in love with their stories then and I am more in love with them now. I welcome these little ones to Puppy Love as my favorites in 2011.
